F Tubas
Thank you to Tony Clements for these instrument
descriptions.
Yamaha YFB-621S
4 Piston valves + 1 Rotary
This is an amazing small F tuba. I have used if for Gregson Concerto and "Carnival" it is fast and smooth. I use one of these for my cimbasso, when indicated in the score, Mendelssohn, Verdi and the like. Last year, I played it for "Nutcracker" and my trombone section loved it. The sound is clear and even and the pitch spot on. The low C and B center perfectly every time. Comes with hard case.
Gronitz PF125 4/4 F tuba
4 piston valves + 1 rotary
This full-size F tuba features excellent intonation, responsive low register, and a powerful sound that projects when it has to, yet retains subtlety and focus at low volumes as well. Equally at home in quintet or orchestral settings.
Yamaha YFB822 4/4 F tuba
Bore .768", bell 17-1/2", 4 piston valves + 1 rotary, available in either silver plate or laquered brass
The YFB822 features hand-lapped, corrosion-resistant Monel piston valves, hand lapped tuning slides, and a large bell. The response and intonation (particularly in the low register) are outstanding, and the horn projects with warm, impressive power.
This is the standard for a large F tuba that can
substitute for a CC tuba, thus allowing the player to use a
more nimble horn with no limitations in the low range.
Gronitz FZ-127
.748-.787-.827 bore
LARGE 6 valve rotary F tuba with tuning jigger on main slide
Bobo Model YFB-821
This newly released F tuba from the workshop of Yamaha was done with the close relationship of the Yamaha Development Team and Tuba Virtuoso, Roger Bobo. If you liked the 621, you'll LOVE the 821. It has all of the playing characteristics of the 621, but with a larger sound. Also, the valve tubing is slightly re-worked making the 3rd & 4th valved notes play a bit more openly than the 621. As far as I know, it is not yet available in silver. This one did not come with the usual hard Yamaha case, so I have Glen Cronkhite custom make a cordura case for it, which I will include in its sale. It comes with two 5th valve slides for more flexibility.
E-flat Tubas
Yamaha YEB321 4/4 E-flat tuba
Bore .689", bell 15-1/8", 4 piston valves, available in either silver plate or laquered brass
This intermediate level E-flat tuba features hand-lapped, corrosion-resistant Monel piston valves and hand lapped tuning slides for air-tight, smooth action. The excellent intonation and response help to foster a feel for correct pitch and phrasing in beginning players.
CC Tubas
Alexander Model 163/6 (CC tuba)
0.808 bore
I had this tuba custom made. It is the middle sized Alex (.808 bore) and I had some special things done to it. One, NO lyre holder or strap rings, in addition, the lead pipe is not soldered onto the bell. This makes the large gold brass bell (the rest of the tuba is yellow brass) vibrate and play with a lot of freedom. The whole tuba is lacquered except for the bell. Again, this gives the bell lots of freedom to vibrate and ring. The lead pipe and valve cluster is also gold brass. The 5th and 6th valves allow you to have many fingering possibilities making even the most difficult trills and patterns easy. If you like playing a large rotary tuba, it is worth checking out this marvelous instrument. AND it has that glorious Alexander sound. The pitch is excellent on this sample.
2/24/06 - SOLD OUT - We're sure to order another. This
was a beautiful instrument.
Also available as the 163-5 with the standard setup of 5
rotary valves. We try to keep one in stock in all
yellow brass, and another with gold brass bell.
Alexander 164 (CC tuba)
0.850 Bore
This immense rotary tuba (.850 bore) is perfect for Mahler, Prokofiev and the largest orchestral works. If you are mainly a band player, this tuba had a great big sound that produces a ton of fundamental, but with enough presence to be heard above the loudest brass section. This is not a good tuba of you are a one tuba guy as it is too large for quintet and solo work.

Mirafone 1291-5U
4 piston + 1 rotary
This is a great mid-priced pro line CC tuba. This tuba is good for everything; quintet, orchestra, band, solo. If you want a terrific piston tuba and you can own only ONE tuba, this would be an excellent choice.
Also available as the 1292, with medium sized leadpipe.
Gronitz PCM 4/4 CC tuba
4 piston valves + 1 rotary
The PCM is a great all around 4/4 5-valve (4+1) CC tuba. I've used it in orchestra and quintet and works well in both settings.

Bore .770", bell 17-3/4", 5 rotary valves, available in either silver plate or laquered brass
An industry standard for over 50 years, the 186 is as
close to "one size fits all" as you're going to come.

Gronitz PCK 6/4 CC 4+1
6/4 - 5 valve (4+1) CC
